針對釣魚台主權爭議，馬英九總統3日公開投書媒體，強調中華民國擁有釣魚台列嶼的主權立場。總統從歷史、地理、地質和國際法4個層面說明。總統並認為，前總統李登輝日前訪日時公開表示「釣魚台是日本的，不是台灣領土」，說法違反史實、違反中華民國憲法與國際法，並嚴重傷害國家主權、人民感情與台灣主體性，「是重大失言，李登輝應該收回此話並向國人道歉」。
總統府發言人陳以信進一步表示，馬總統認為身為中華民國總統，對國家領土與主權必須有「寸土必爭」的決心，透過投書可以更完整的呈現主權論述。陳以信：『(原音)馬總統強調，身為中華民國總統，對於國家主權跟領土立場，必須要有寸土必爭的決心。透過投書呈現完整清楚的主權論述，證明中華民國對釣魚台主權主張的立場不是信口開河，而是具有歷史、地理、地質以及國際法上的堅實基礎。』
